I think the problem of political correctness creates confusion across the board. It is the lack of the ability to distinguish between a person and an idea. As you put it between Muslim and Islam for example. The same goes for racism. It is not racist to criticise a black person, or aspects of black culture. It is racist to treat a black person as inferior to a white person.
The distinction is clear for me. Just frustratingly difficult to get across. The confusion is also on the side of the racists as it is on the side of the regressive left. The regressive left confuses criticism for racism, the racist confuses racism with being anti-PC.
